Why You Should Use Firefox

Written by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 12:27 AM

I personally like firefox as much as i like my computer. It doesn't sucks as other browser. But maybe you need a little more extra facts in order to switch to firefox, aren't you?. Here are some of coolest facts that firefox has.

Improved Tab Browsing
Why bother open new window for a new website we want to visit. Using tabs make it more efficient browsing as many site as you can. Firefox tabs is even more fun. Suppose you have too many tabs open and you just can't switch to another tab, just click on the button on upper right corner and you will get an easy-to-read list of all your open tabs.

Damn!! I accidentally close a tab. I don't remember the link address, what should i do? Don't worry, just go to the History menu to bring it back from the list of "Recently Closed Tabs" then select the desired one. Another funtastic way is right click on whatever tab and select "Undo Close Tab". Magic works!

Spell Checking
Very handy when you get a rush. Firefox 2 has built-in spell checking to keep you from making any mistakes in your blog post or web base email. You don't have to worry again. Firefox do its job.

Search Suggestions
Firefox can read your mind and suggest search terms for what you're looking for. Simply typing into the Search Bar, and a drop down list of suggestions will appear. You may select your search by using any search engine like Google, Yahoo, Answer, or Wikipedia.

Session Restore
Linux is stable and i proof that with my 6 months uptime of my desktop, doing my daily work. Okay, it freeze sometime, but i simply just terminate the zombie process by firing killall command so the system is never have to reboot everytime i get stuck. And that is rarely happen to firefox too though. After killing firefox i start it over again and wow.. firefox restore all of my tabs, even in-progress downloads i had running and the text i typed into forms. Cool!! . You can even set Firefox ( version 2 or higher ) to always restore your previous session instead of loading the default home page, so you'll never lose place again.

Web Feeds (RSS)
There are huge of feed reader program out there. But why not integrate it with firefox? Firefox givis you full control over web feeds, showing you a preview and letting you choose how you want to subscribe.

Live Titles

Keep an eye on that auction or the status of a delivery using the new Live Titles feature in Firefox 2. Compact enough to fit as a bookmark label, Live Titles are regularly updated summaries of the most important information on a Web page. As the information on the page gets updated, so does your Live Title. Try one out in Firefox 2 by bookmarking www.woot.com.

Live Bookmarks
Firefox Live Bookmarks let you view Web feeds such as news and blog headlines in the bookmarks toolbar or menu. With one glance, quickly review the latest headlines from your favorite sites and click to go directly to the articles that interest you.

Pop-up Blocker
Firefox keeps you in control of the Web pages you’re viewing, blocking annoying pop-ups. Firefox’s pop-up blocker notifies you when pop-ups are blocked via the information bar or icon on the lower right of the screen.

Streamlined Interface
The user interface in Firefox 2 has been updated to improve usability without altering the familiarity of the browsing experience.

Accessibility
Firefox delivers a better browsing experience for everyone - including those who are visually impaired. Firefox includes support for DHTML accessibility. Web developers can create pages that reduce the amount of tabbing required to navigate a document to minimize keystrokes for those with mobility disabilities. Firefox also includes support for Microsoft Active Accessibility, Microsoft’s accessibility API standard for Windows. This support allows Firefox to work with screen readers such as GW Micro’s Window-Eyes and Freedom Scientific’s JAWS. Firefox 2 (Windows version) meets US federal government requirements that software be easily accessible to users with physical impairments.

Phishing Protection
Phishing Protection takes Firefox's security to a new level, helping to safeguard your financial information and protect you from identity theft. When you encounter a Web site that is a suspected forgery, Firefox will warn you and offer to take you to a search page so you can find the real Web site you were looking for.

Open Source, More Secure
At the heart of Firefox is an open source development process driven by thousands of passionate, experienced developers and security experts spread all over the world. Our openness and active community of experts helps to ensure our products are more secure and updated quickly, while also enabling us to take advantage of the best third party security scanning and evaluation tools to further bolster overall security.

Automated Update
Firefox’s update system always checks to see if you’re running the latest version, and notifies you when a security update is available. These security updates are small (usually 200KB - 700KB), giving you only what you need and making the security update quick to download and install. The automated update system provides updates for Firefox on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux in over 40 different languages.

Protection from Spyware
Firefox will not allow a Web site to download, install, or run programs on your computer without your explicit agreement. Period. You will be notified whenever downloading or installing software, and Firefox will always tell you what’s happening so that you can stay in control of your computer.

Clear Private Data
Firefox offers the ability to clear all your private Web browsing data with just one click with the “Clear Private Data” tool. You can be confident that when you clear your private data in Firefox it’s gone - whether you are using your own computer or one at the library.

And Add-on for Everyone
You can choose from over 1,000 add-ons at the Firefox Add-ons Web site. A Firefox add-on can help you comparison shop, share bookmarks with your friends, see the weather in a corner of your browser, write to your weblog, get news, listen to music - all from inside the browser you already love. You can even change the appearance of your browser - from buttons to colors and fonts - so that it matches your own personal style.

Add-ons Manager for Extensions and Themes
The new Add-ons Manager improves the user interface for managing extensions and themes, making it even easier for you to customize Firefox 2. Install, uninstall, enable and disable your add-ons in a single place.

Distribution Release : Damn Small Linux 4.2

Written by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 1:22 AM

Robert Shingledecker has announced the final release of Damn Small Linux 4.2. Damn Small Linux / DSL was originally developed as an experiment to see how many usable desktop applications can fit inside a 50MB live CD. It was at first just a personal tool/toy. But over time Damn Small Linux grew into a community project with hundreds of development hours put into refinements including a fully automated remote and local application installation system and a very versatile backup and restore system which may be used with any writable media including a hard drive, a floppy drive, or a USB device.

With Damn Small Linux you can :
  • Boot from a business card CD as a live linux distribution (LiveCD)
  • Boot from a USB pen drive
  • Boot from within a host operating system (that's right, it can run *inside* Windows)
  • Run very nicely from an IDE Compact Flash drive via a method we call "frugal install"
  • Transform into a Debian OS with a traditional hard drive install
  • Run light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of Ram
  • Run fully in RAM with as little as 128MB (you will be amazed at how fast your computer can be!)
  • Modularly grow -- DSL is highly extendable without the need to customize
Give it a spin, start download the new version right now. Or, buy the CD here

Free tool!! Linux reader in windows

Written by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 6:48 PM

Very handy and useful tool. DiskInternals Linux Recovery can recover both the files you just accidentally deleted and the files which have been erased long time ago. It’s also capable of restoring corrupted files and can read and recover the information located on an inaccessible drive. The files you restore can be saved on any (including network) disk, which is visible to the host operating system.
The utility also allows you to repair a corrupt or damaged partition table and attempt to restore a disk after a serious crash, so you’ll have a chance to repair a serious malfunction right away.

In case you noticed that you lost a piece of valuable information only after you formatted a partition, DiskInternals Linux Recovery can unformat the disk and it’ll be up and running again.

DiskInternals Linux Recovery can create a virtual partition and mount an image so it can be processed just like any another regular disk.

DiskInternals Linux Recovery is easy-to-use as its interface resembles the Explorer menu. The recovery process is simple and convenient and comes through a built in wizard so you don’t have to be an advanced user to handle with the utility just follow the provided options.

DiskInternals Linux Recovery serves well to save your deleted or damaged valuable data and comes with a number of useful features. It is both handy and absolutely free. The program will benefit anyone who wants to recover some data from Ext2/Ext3 partitions.

You can download a full-featured free version of DiskInternals Linux Recovery for free.

Microsoft gets paranoid

Written by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 4:44 AM

I was so curious about microsoft official site, wondering is there any linux content in their site. I found these silly results by typing linux in the search box. Silly, i think it is absolutely a propaganda rather than giving visitors real facts.

Another funny thing : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314458
And another : allboutlinux

I think that microsoft is at their highest level of scary about linux. They get paranoid.

KDE 4, thin or fat?

Written by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 6:49 AM

Everybody likes those sleek icons, lovely wallpapers and wonderful GUI of KDE. But the negative side is, KDE is well known leak in memory consumption. Even 256 MB of RAM on my PC running Ubuntu Gutsy still not enough. I think 512 MB or even 1 Gigs will do fine jobs. Imagine KDE like a fancy car with all unecessary yet confused button on the dashboard, with 4000 CC shipped on the bonet. It has great power, but it needs more gas too.

How about the new version of KDE 4? By testing the Live KDE 4 on my laptop, i end up with this conclusion : KDE is now thinner. The reason for the decline in memory of KDE4 is it provides great improvements in almost all areas of the environment. Only a system (kwrapper) consumes more memory than is currently in KDE 3.5 was the case. The largest savings of nearly 50 percent was performed by kdeinit. Also, the elimination of various applications, such as artsd in saving memory.

Have any experience on KDE 4? Post your comment below.

Manga Download Using Bash

Written by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 10:19 PM

There are plenty of site that allows you to read manga online, but you have to tolerate for the slow access and ton’s of heavy loaded ads. You can’t download the manga directly using batch download provided by wget or any download manager. but if you know how to do bash script, you could somehow download them.

Those online site usually store manga in jpg format, with name of some patterns, and stores in the same folder. If you manage to know the first image filename and the last image filename in a particular folder, you can download them using seq command with bash do loop. Let say the first image and the last image’s name is in this format:

http://c1.kukudm.com/comic/kuku2comic/OnePiece/Vol_01/OnePiece_01_001.jpg
http://c1.kukudm.com/comic/kuku2comic/OnePiece/Vol_01/OnePiece_01_104.jpg

You can guess, the images between them should be 001, 002, 003 until 104. Therefore a simple bash script will looks like this:

#!/bin/bash
for i in `seq -f"%03g" 1 104`
do
wget -c "http://c1.kukudm.com/comic/kuku2comic/OnePiece/Vol_01/OnePiece_01_$i.jpg"
done

Seq allows you to define printf like formating by specified with -f, %03g is actually tells seq I got three digits, fill the blank digits with 0, and the range is from 1 to 104. After that, use wget to download them. Simple isn’t it?

You can run bash script under windows platform too if you have cygwin installed. But bare in mind, not all manga are downloadable with this technique. Certain site pad the image’s filename with some random characters, that prevent downloads by this simple script.

Gmail Chat for advertising your site

Written by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 9:56 AM

gmailcontacts.gifI've recently become quite fond of how Google Talk is embedded in Gmail.

I'm sure everybody has noticed this before, but the way that Google Talk displays not only status indicators but also one-liners from your friends is really cool.

Just today I found out -- through Gmail chat -- that my friend Sarah has laryngitis. She didn't IM me, she just put the word "laryngitis :(" beside her status.

And a few of my contacts have been using the status "one-liner" to provide more detail than that. My friend Jason Boog, for example, advertises his blog on the status line. I haven't seen her online recently, but Casey McKinnon from Galacticast has a robust status message that I think (I'm recalling from memory here) includes the logo from her videoblog.

This is nothing new to kids who spend all day on Facebook, where it's considered bad form not to keep your status updated at all times. But it may be news to professionals, many of whom keep Gmail open all day long. So this is just one more way to keep your name out there. Take advantage of it.

Linux Tips : Su and Root, The difference

Written by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 8:47 AM

Why bother? when i type su at the console and give administrator rights, i go on my own. But wait, it is wise to understand the philosophy behind this.

There have been questions , what is the difference between “su” and “root” . . well, the difference is minimal but still very important.
As you login as “root” right from booting the system, all the privileges are set to root, what makes your system more vulnerable to your own mistakes and those wishing to enter your system. As you login as normal user, the privileges are limited, thus it´s safer. To be able to do administrative tasks you can temporally login as root using “su” in a console/terminal, that way the root privileges are limited to the actions you do in the console ( and the applications you start from the console ). So the rest of the system is still in “normal user” mode, and this makes it safer. We do use the same password for “su” and “root”, but once you are logged in as normal user, typing “root” in console/terminal will only give you “bash: root: command not found...

USB Flash Disk won't mount in Ubuntu Gutsy : Fixed.

Written by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 2:51 AM

I have 2 kinds of USB flash drive. One is Sandisk 2 GigaByte and the other is PixelView 512 MB. None of these disks are mounted on my Ubunty Gutsy. I tried every USB port in my laptop and PC. Still won't work. The error messages was :

vfat/mount_

options
** (gnome-mount:1378): DEBUG: read default option 'usefree' from gconf strlist key /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options

The weird thing is, if i try to mount it as a root in command line, it works. But that was too tedious. I don't want to type mount command everytime i plug my drive. After doing some search i found the fix here. It is a bug in gnome-mount and we simply just remove 'use-free' option in gconf-editor.
